Advancing Education was founded in June 2024 after Julie Sears helped lead a transformative study abroad trip to Cambodia. Having previously visited and collaborated with special schools in other countries, this trip profoundly left an impact on her due to the lack of resources for students with disabilities. Julie witnessed government officials, non-governmental organization (NGO) leaders, staff, and teachers striving to support learners but struggling due to a lack of critical tools and resources to provide appropriate services. The experience was both eye-opening and deeply motivating.
Advancing Education was created to bring attention to these unmet needs and foster collaborations to help provide educational resources and supports. By shining a light on the challenges faced by these students, we aim to inspire action and support from others who share a commitment to educational equity for children with disabilities.
In addition to supporting primary and secondary students in developing countries, Julie and her husband are actively engaged with international students at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). Many of these students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and face significant challenges in accessing the support they need. Through Advancing Education, the goal is to assist these students with scholarships and additional resources to ensure their success.
